Principal's Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had another two productive weeks here at School.
This week we saw our first before school choir rehearsals on Monday and Thursday mornings. Working with Mr. Ives, the students will build up a repertoire of songs and performance skills. We look forward to seeing our students perform in future assemblies and events. All ages are welcome to attend rehearsals.
Our Kinder to Year 6 students participated in Fire Education Training with firefighter, Todd. They practiced the essential actions to take in the event of a fire. They also had a little fun trying to beat Todd in dressing dress up in firefighting gear the quickest!

Information about upcoming NAPLAN Testing
All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in Australia do NAPLAN tests in March each year. NAPLAN tests students’ skills in reading, writing and maths. Students read some of the questions and listen to others with headphones. The tests will get easier or harder, depending on how students are going in the test. Students do four different tests.
The names of the four tests are:
- Writing
- Reading
- Conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation)
- Numeracy
Students in Year 3 will do the Writing test using pencil and paper. Year 3 students will answer the other test questions on the computer.
Students in Years 5, 7 and 9 will answer all their test questions on computers.
Teachers will help students get ready for NAPLAN tests.
Schools will get their students’ results. The school will then give parents/carers a report showing their own child’s results.
Parents/carers can talk to the teacher about these results.
NAPLAN shows how students are going all over Australia. People who work in the Australian Government, state and territory education authorities and schools use NAPLAN results. The results let them see which schools are doing well and which schools might need help.
Talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child doing the tests.

Athletics Carnival next Wed 6th March
Finally, we have our Athletics Carnival next week. I look forward to seeing our students wearing their House colours (either blue or maroon). If your young person is not sure which house they are in please ask them to speak with their teacher or let us know and we can find out for them. The program for the carnival can be read further in the newsletter.

BDHS Association
Introductory To Our New Staff.
Helen Doyle,
Mrs Doyle is our new teacher for classes 7/8 and 9/10 in the subjects of English, HASS, and My Education, as well as this she is taking her own newly introduced to the school route of teaching the Australian curriculum while also giving every student their own passion-based route to learning the curriculum. Personal Interest Projects, otherwise known as PIP, is a new take to the curriculum she has brought down from New South Wales to help students learn the curriculum while also giving them the broad opening to learn in a way that keeps them focused and makes it more enjoyable for the student. Her inspiration for bringing PIP into schools is and intriguing subject of conversation, she believes that bringing all the curriculum’s subjects together as a different line of study will leave the students with a more open-mindset to their learning as it takes the basic subjects of the curriculum that have to be learnt, and combine it with the student’s interests, it also shows higher-authorities of government and other schools that subjects don’t have to be isolated to their own subjects, one topic can be branched into many needed subjects. As well as this, it also gives the students and teachers the opportunity to have a more one-on-one connection, giving the teachers the chance to have a stronger idea of a student’s interests and to open up students to having a trustworthy adult to which they can talk to if needed. Before moving to Tasmania, she taught at many different schools across New South Wales as a relief teacher and a Careers Advisor, and although there is a significant difference going from teaching there to teaching here in Tasmania, she seems to have adjusted quite well in such a short period of time. She comes to us from over in New South Wales with her husband, her dog, her sewing machine for doing quilting as it’s one of her main interests, and her caravan, and although she has had to leave some of her family over in Australia, we hope to make her feel at home here in Tasmania. As well as quilting, she also enjoys bushwalking, which will be give her the wide opportunity to bushwalk across Tasmania with all the untouched bushland we have.
Lee Nichols,
Mr Nichols is from Tasmania he is our new P.E and grade 5/6 teacher, he has a 1-year-old Jack Russel named archie. Knowing a lot about the school previously and schools around here, he has taught across Tasmania mainly in primary schools, so he hasn’t been around older students a lot. He is very passionate about the physical education side of his role, liking all sports and participating in fun runs. He, like other new teachers, hope to see students enjoying their teaching from them and in general, he seeks new leadership and is looking forward to seeing the leadership amongst both older and younger students increase. He also wants to see community culture, showing off how our school is and our achievements along with presenting to the student’s parents and community members our achievements and goals. So far, his impression of the school and students is welcoming, eager and friendly and hopes to keep it that way.
Welcome to you Both!

Year 7 & 8 English
We have started a unit on Communication. This unit is designed to foster students’ communication skills – both verbal and nonverbal. We are trying to encourage the students to feel confident and engage at equal rates.
The first exercise was to look at this image and identify:
- Things that couldn’t be disputed – literal reading – for example the girl is wearing orange clothing.
- What you think may be happening – inferred reading – for example, the girl is trying to hide behind her hair.
- What the emotions or personalities are that are on display – inferred reading/viewing.
- What you imagine may have occurred before this photo was taken.
- What you think may happen in the next 10 minutes.
The students worked firstly in pairs, which each person having 30 seconds to tell their partner what they thought and then they swapped speaker roles. Then the pairs were formed into groups of 4 to come up with a consensus.
The students all worked well on this group activity. They are not only learning about communication from an image but also putting this into practice which is very important. Miss Boas also joined us and her expertise was very welcome.
School Leaders
Jai, Keeley, Isobella,Danielle,Robert and Brodie went to the Athletics carnival at Kempton. Absent was Ashley. These students were very helpful at the carnival helping as marshalls.
