Principals Report

Over the last two weeks our students have been involved in quite a few different activities. On Tuesday and Wednesday our K-8 students participated in a Learn to Beatbox Workshop with Jobe. Feedback from students and staff was very positive and it was great to hear that a number of students felt comfortable to have a go at demonstrating their own beatboxing skills.
In Science last Friday, Class 3 and 4 participated in a workshop with Kumudu Amarawardhana and Dilani Ratnajeewa, both from Sri Lanka as part of the University of Tasmania Inspiring Women in STEM project. Kumudu is the first female engineer in the Sri Lankan Air Force and Dilani is a PhD student in Transport and Logistics Management. Both Kumudu and Dilani talked about their careers and experiences in STEM. Students particularly enjoyed hearing about their life’s journey and how they became scientists and of particular interest was their volunteer work in trying to get more women involved in STEM careers.
Last week some students from Class 3 and 4 participated in a Wool Handling course at Dennistoun Farm. Next Friday these students will be demonstrating their wool handling skills when they compete at the Campbell Town Show. We wish them well.
Congratulations to Mikel, Chloe C and Brock for their selection and participation in the Inter-high School Districts Athletics team on Tuesday. Mikel came 3rd in the 1500m, Chloe 6th in the High Jump, Brock came 1st the 100m, 200m, 400m and Relay events. Well done on these remarkable achievements. Goodluck to the students attending the SPSSA Champions Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre on Friday. We look forward to celebrating their achievements in the next newsletter.
In Pastoral Care lessons our values focus for the term is Courage. As part of this program each fortnight a different social hook is discussed and investigated in classrooms. Our focus next week will be, 'Think with your own brain' which is connected to thinking about their own actions and how this impacts on others. As a school community we will also be participating in a 'Do it for Dolly Day on Tuesday 14 June. Money raised will be donated to Dolly's Dream Foundation, more information about this will be released soon.
A reminder that the next School Association meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 8 June from 5.30am - 7.00pm in the Resource Room. You are also able to attend the meeting online, please contact the school if you would like access to the online meeting. We are hoping that we will have draft plans from the architect of the new Agriculture Classroom to share at the meeting.

Class 1 Special Visitors
This term in Class 1, we are learning about all different types of families. We were very lucky on Thursday the 19th to have a visit from our very special Mrs Quinn and her beautiful twins, Harvey and Isla. The Class 1 students were enchanted by their tiny visitors and could not wait to have a hold!

The book for National Simultaneous Storytime this year is Family Tree. This book ties in well with Class 1s different types of families.

Central Highlands Meal Delivery Program

Cooking with Brigette
In cooking our students made Fudgy Chocolate Banana Bread. This recipy is very versitile as you can make it into muffins or bread.

Inspiring Women in STEM
On Friday the 20th May, 2 recipients of fellowships at the University of Tasmania, came and spoke with Class 3 and 4 about their projects in Science. Both women had come from Sri Lanka, where it is not common to see women in the scientific field.
It was interesting to hear both women's journey and how different school is between Australia and their home country. We learned that there can be up to 50 students in a classroom with one teacher and technology access is limited.
Learning other people's stories ties in with our school values of respect, courage, growth and aspiration.

Beatbox Visit
In week 4 we were lucky to have Jobe from Beatbox come to visit BDHS. He did workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday with our students from Prep to 8, showing them how to make music without instruments but with sounds. All students were engaged, with students saying, "He was awesome. It was cool how he made the sounds from his mouth." Some of our older students demonstrated the school's value of courage, by showing their own personal skills in front of their class, while our younger students showed their families at home.
It is great when we are able to offer these experiences to our students, where learning and fun go hand in hand.

New Signing in and out Procedures at School
