Term 2 - Week 2 - 12th May,2022
Principals Report
It was lovely to welcome back our LIL students to indoor LIL this morning with Ms Burns particularly with the colder mornings we have had recently.
On Friday we farewell Maddy Smith who joined us as a Teacher Assistant in Term 4 last year as she has accepted a full time administration role in a medical practice. We wish Maddy all the best in her new career and thank her for her commitment and dedication working with and supporting our students. Next week we welcome some new staff members, two new Teacher Assistants, Bryanna Chivers on a Tuesday, Sharon Breen on a Wednesday and Thursday and Kimmi Newman has increased her hours working on a Friday supporting our students in classrooms. Mr Eric Vreman will be joining our teaching team teaching German, Garden and maths on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
This week our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 have all participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Testing. This year except for Year 3 Writing, all of the tests have been completed online. Next week Ms Murphy will be following up with the students that have been away this week to arrange a different time for them to complete the testing. I would like to congratulate everyone that has participated in the testing and thank them for trying their best. Special thanks to Ms Murphy, Miss Pennicott and Kimmi for making this happen.
This week as many of you would be aware, there have been changes to the school bus service of an afternoon, as a result of the high demand for students travelling on the Apsley bus. Our bus contractors Julie and Ian have notified us that the Schaw Street students will now be travelling home of an afternoon with Julie on the Central Highlands bus. Of a morning, Ian on the Apsley bus will continue to pick up the Schaw Street students as per Term 1 arrangements. Don’t forget that it is important for parents/carers to liaise with bus drivers about when they won't be travelling on the buses. We will continue to monitor this situation.
Our Year 11/12 Build is nearing completion and we are very excited and have started to plan moving into this new teaching and learning space. At this stage it is anticipated that the new classroom will be handed over to the school in June. On Tuesday I had a tour of the new building, it is such a warm and welcoming space and the classroom will be a wonderful addition to our school. Planning of our Agriculture classroom is continuing and we encourage you to provide your ideas to the following Padlet:

On Friday we wish our secondary students well as they travel to Hobart to participate in the Districts Athletics Carnival. We hope that everyone involved has a wonderful day and we look forward to hearing the stories and seeing the photos. Commencing next week some of our Year 9 and 10 students will commence Wool Handling and shearing shed training at Dennistoun Farm culminating with our students competing in the wool handling event at the Campbell Town Show on 3rd June. We wish them well with this.

Children's University - Introduction to Child Safety opportunity
The Peter Underwood Centre has created a free course that can help us all to develop a better understanding of our children’s rights and how to help keep them safe.
More information and the registration link are available here: Introduction to Children's Rights and Safety | University of Tasmania (utas.edu.au)
About this short course
As members of your community, it is important to understand the role you play in ensuring our children's voices are heard.
Children have the right to express their views and have them taken seriously in matters that affect them. When this right is observed, adults can support children more effectively or make informed decisions leading to improved subjective wellbeing among children.
You can support young people by learning the role of duty bearers and rights holders, and how a community that accepts responsibility for keeping children safe, is in a good position to develop and implement effective policies and procedures around child safety.
This course has been designed to help you apply the policies and procedures set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child within your own community.
Who should do this course?
This course is for members of the community who interact with children. Enhance your understanding of children’s rights to help make informed decisions that are in their best interests.
By undertaking this course, you will learn to:
- Contribute to cultural change towards better realising children’s rights and ensuring their safety.
- Improve wellbeing among children.
- Ensure children are taken seriously and given opportunity, support and a willing ear, to improve communication and therefore child safety.
- Ensure you are acting in the best interests of the child and facilitating their right to have a say in matters that affect them.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the principles and values that underpin the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
- Apply knowledge of children's rights.
- Identify appropriate behaviour according to a child safety policy and code of conduct.
Course Structure
This course is self-paced, fully online, and will take around 1 hour. You will be required to complete a quiz to test your learning before receiving a certificate.
