Term 1, Week 9, 7th April, 2022
Principals Report
COVID19 continues to make an impact on our school with a number of our staff isolating as they are close contacts. Sourcing relief teachers to cover classes has been very tricky lately and our priority in timetabling has been to minimise disruptions where possible. As a result of this we have had to make the tough decision to postpone the school Athletics Carnival which had been scheduled to occur on Tuesday 12 April. Ms Griggs is hoping to reschedule it for early Term 2.
The Easter Hat Parade will still be going ahead on Tuesday 12 April for students in Kinder/Prep, Class 1 and Class 2 and all students will be participating in the Easter Egg hunt in the Hazelnut Grove later that day. As per Department of Education and Public Health advice, parents are unable to participate in these events.
I can confirm that I will be continuing as Acting Principal at Bothwell for Term 2. On Wednesday the Principal position was advertised with the intention that the permanently appointed Principal will transition late Term 2 for a Term 3 start. This week we farewell our MDT teacher Mr Theo as he is increasing his days at Oatlands District High School where he currently works as the Agriculture Teacher. We wish him well in this role and our scarecrows in the garden area look fantastic. Mrs Byers has also commenced maternity leave. We wish her well and look forward to hearing from her soon about the new addition to her family. We are still working on our timetable for next term and will confirm staffing when this is finalised.
On Monday 28 March, Mr O’Toole, Chris, John and I visited Exeter District High School and Lilydale District High School to view their school farms, especially their agriculture classrooms as part of the revitalisation of the Bothwell School Farm master planning group. The day concluded at Mr O’Toole’s farm where we got to see his hazelnut grove and saffron crop. This was a most valuable and enlightening experience for the Master Planning group which includes architects, agriculture curriculum lead teacher and Department of Education representatives. As part of this process we would like to invite our school community to provide feedback on what you would like to see happening on our school farm. Community members are invited to provide feedback by accessing the Padlet link: https://padlet.com/nikigriggs1/mzqaer5a90zvedvg Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas. If you don’t have access to the internet, please phone the school to share your ideas for our school farm revitalisation.
Louise Anders,
Acting Principal
The Young Citizen of the Year
On Wednesday 9th March 2022, the Central Highlands Council held there Australia Day Awards presentation at the Bothwell Town Hall. The Young Citizen of the Year award was awarded to James Brazendale for his contributions towards raising awareness for young students like himself with Dyslexia.
COVID-19 symptoms to look out for in children
Thank you to our entire school community for your cooperation this term by practising COVID-safe behaviours.
As you know, an important COVID-safe behaviour is to stay at home if you’re unwell and get tested for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test.
Public Health tells us that the number of cases of COVID-19 in children is low, and they’re likely to have milder symptoms.
It’s a good reminder to be mindful of the symptoms of COVID-19 in children. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 in children are cough, fever, runny nose and gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Cooking with Brigette
The students made Spring Rolls for their cooking and to their suprise they really enjoyed them.
It is so nice to see how well our students are doing with their cooking.
Class 1 learning about primary and secondary colours
In Art, Class 1 have been exploring colours by discussing primary and secondary colours.
Students were given play dough in the three primary colours. They were then challenged to mix the play dough to create secondary colours. An extension activity was to then create tertiary colours by mixing primary and secondary colours. It was lots of fun!
Stem Experiment - Class 2
In STEM this week, Class 2 were challenged to make a lemon sink. In pairs, students were given a lemon, a bowl of water, a knife and a chopping board. The students had lots of fun experimenting and persisting with the challenge. We then discussed what buoyancy is and how the peel and pith of a lemon makes the lemon buoyant.
Class 3 Carringa Visit
Human Library Visit
On Wednesday, the 30th April, the Human Library came to BDHS to share their stories of resilience. The 2x 1.5-hour workshop was attended by Class 3 and 4, separately. The "books" were 5 Tasmanians sharing stories of how they have overcome adversity, whether it be disability, gender, or culture.
It was great to see all our students actively engaging and being respectful. When students were asked, they had the following to say:
Grace B, "I thought that the human library was great. I thought that Paul's story was the best because he never gave up on long term goals and I would recommend that they go to another school and tell their stories."
Hailey, "I would recommend the Human Library to another school, so people know what other people are going through and for other people to realise that no one is perfect. I would also like to recommend the Human Library, so other people can walk in other people's shoes."
Jack, "For me I found the human library very fun. All their stories were very interesting and some of the information might help in the future. I found Paul’s story very interesting and was very inspiring and I enjoyed it a lot. Sadly, I didn’t get to hear Glenda’s story but the ones I did hear were fun. I learnt lots and now I know how I can help somebody if they're in a bad situation. Andy’s story was also very interesting."
Ella, "I just wished that I could have seen all of them and heard all the stories. They were awesome and I loved all their stories. I don't have a favourite because I loved them all."
Thank you again to the School Association for their support in supporting this valuable program in visiting our school.
Class 3 Pastoral Care
Cooking with Brigette
This week in cooking our students made ANZAC biscuits and cupcakes. Hopefully the students are keeping all their recipies in a file for when they leave school and making the recipes at home.
Class 1 and Prep Gardening
This term Class 1/Preps worked with Mr Theo, Kimmi, and Anne our school Chaplain, in the school garden every Thursday. Purple carrots, lettuce, and strawberries were planted, then topped with straw to keep our plants warm. This week, the scarecrows made by Class 1 in 2021, were finally able to be put up and they look amazing. Sadly, Mr. Theo won't be returning in Term 2, but thankfully our garden program will continue. We can't wait to see the fruits of our hard work.
