Term 3 -Week 4, 19th August, 2021
Principal's Report
Week 4 Term 3
Assembly
Did you join us for our assembly on Wednesday?
These are such great opportunities for us to celebrate the success of our students. One of the best parts for me, other than seeing the students share their work, is thecourage they display in standing in front of a large audeince sharing and speaking to explain the work. This week I was so impressed to hear how clear the students were in projecting their voices. Well done to all who shared and to the audience who is always exceptionally attentive. Our next assembly will be Book Week Parade/Assembly on Wednesday of Week 6 and Week 10 there is another general assembly on the Monday afternoon. Look out for reminders of the dates and come along and join us!
Parent meeting for discussion of Year 9 to 12 Celebration Dinner
I would like to invite all parents of students in years 9 to 12 to join me to discuss plans and possible venues for this event. The meeting will be Friday 20th August at 3pm in the Flexi Room. Please come along so we can plan a lovely celebration dinner for our students. I had hoped to have this meeting on a Thursday afternoon, however, I am not on site the next two Thursdays.
BDHS Values Behaviour Matrix
Enclosed in the newsletter you will find our new BDHS Values Behaviour Matrix which will guide how we engage with our learning, in social situations and when we are out in the community and on excursions. The matrix is aligned to our new Values – Aspiration, Courage, Growth and Respect. The students have all been involved in the co-construction of this document and it will now become central to our daily work.

School Values
Term 3 Value - Growth
This term, as a school we are working on the value Growth and what it means to us. Growth is an important value to have as we go on our learning journey throughout life. Some synonyms for growth are success, gain, prosperity, advance, expansion, and improvement. We look forward to seeing growth in our students this term and the rest of the year.
In Primary, we are promoting healthy choices, this includes our Fruit Break in the morning, which allows our students' brains to be ready to learn. Please help us by packing a fruit, vegetable, or cheese and crackers that your child likes for Fruit Break. Other foods that your child likes are still allowed and can be eaten at Recess or Lunch.
Science Week Excursion
Science Week for week 5. QVMAG excursion Monday August 16th for class 1 and 2. 9am departure. Students may bring a handheld device for the long bus ride, but it is their own responsibility. The school is not responsible for theft, loss, or damage of the device. Students must also adhere to the DoE, Responsible use of Technology Policy.
Secondary Open Afternoon
The School will be holding a Secondary Open afternoon on Monday 6th September from 11.20 a.m till 12.10 p.m. Please come along and see what's happening in the secondary classes. Morning tea will be provided.
Government House visit
On Monday night the 9th August, Caleb Mayne, Mrs Wise and I went to Government House for a formal reception to mark the opening of Science Week. We had the opportunity to meet and chat with Tasmania’s Governor, Her Excellency Barbara Baker. She was interested to hear of our future goals. We were also able to meet up with and chat to some young scientists who told us about their fields of study - Devil Facial Tumours and insects were amongst some of their research topics at the moment. We were also able to meet a veterinarian whose interest was in the devil’s facial tumours who worked at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. It was interesting to see some of the paintings, ornaments and furniture that were in the building and this was probably a once in a lifetime experience for us.

Cooking week two
For cooking in week two the students made Skillett Enchilada meatballs.
These look very tasty indeed. Students are making some really nice dishes to take home and share with their famillies.
Wool Bombing
The whole of the school have been involved with this project. Our students worked with Ann our School Chaplain to learn how to french knit and they used the wool to wrap it around the tree in the front of the school.
It is nice to see the tree out the front of the school with it's winter woolies on.
Peer support from Grades 2-6 in Kinder
This term, students from grades 2-6 have had the opportunity to volunteer regularly as peer helpers in the Kinder playground during the week.
This is a great opportunity for all students to strengthen relationships between different grades, build on interpersonal and problem solving skills and be respectful leaders. Peer helper students have been fantastic role models for their younger peers so far.
Mrs Kershaw-Quinn.
Australian Maths Competition
Fourteen brave students from Class 3 undertook the Australian Maths Competition on Wednesday 4th August. They focussed very hard to achieve their very best.
All of Class 2 also participated in the nation wide competition on Thursday 5th August. The competition has 30 problems to solve within a timeframe and most of them are multiple choice answers.
We all have a long wait until late term 4 to hear their results.
Community Champians.
Cooking on Tuesday's with Mrs Wise
The Tuesday afternoon cooking group enjoyed making scones this week. They were particularly happy about eating some of them with cream and jam.
Class Two in MDT with Mr Cross
In MDT the class two students have been measuring, sanding, drilling and gluing to put together a Noughts and Crosses board game. It is so nice to see all the students happy in their MDT class. Also nice to see our older students supporting them by drilling holes with the big machine. They look fantastic.

Reclink Football
On Thursday 5th August 2021, Bothwell joined forces with Campania to play a round of Reclink football against Oatlands. It was a stellar performance and the combined team came away with an excellent win scoring 119 – 1. From Bothwell, everyone played incredibly well. Notably on the day, Caleb Mayne and Bailey Mayne found a lot of the ball and set up some brilliant passages of play, Jacob Bowerman demonstrated his skill in front of the goals, Brock Watkins proved to be too difficult for Oatlands to stop, Mikel Blundell showed everyone his skill in retrieving the ball from the ground and Michael Pearce took some great marks and put his body on the line on multiple occasions. Congratulations to Stella for stepping up into the coaches’ role and successfully managing to coach the team to victory.
This win puts Bothwell/Campania on top of the ladder. Good luck for finals.
Mrs Wise Tuesday cooking class
On Tuesday 10th August, Mrs Wise and her cooking gentlemen made Choc Chip Cookies.
Their families should be enjoying some very nice cookies.
School Association
The School Association last met on the 28th July, thank you to all who attended. As always it was great to hear Janelle’s update regarding all the happenings at the school. We are always blown away about what our school offers the children and their achievements. We are pleased to welcome back Mrs Byers this term who has been regularly attending the meetings during her maternity leave.
As Chair, I raised the matter of the availability of before and after school care. Janelle has kindly agreed to assist in exploring options. Whilst the school is unable to provide the service they can potentially make a room/area available. The next step is to determine interest and a provider. This process will take time. I encourage you to reach out to Janelle or myself if you would be interested in using this service.
The school association has applied to be part of Bushfest again this year. If you have an idea of what we should do, we would love to hear from you.
We also commenced planning for Father’s Day.
The next meeting is Wednesday 1st September, 5.30pm. Pop it in your diary!
Kind regards,
Annie

Blue Man
Does Bothwell’s (Beyond) Blue Farmer need new clothes?
It has been brought to the attention of the organisers of the Spin In that Bothwell’s farmer is looking a bit ‘worse for wear’, not surprising really, he has withstood wind and rain for some years now and after all, his clothes are made from recycled blue bailing twine!
But of course, the farmer was not created as a fashion model, rather, he was made by the school, the Bothwell and the ‘Spin In’ communities in an act of cooperation and friendship, pulling together people from all walks of life and reminding all of us what can be achieved when we work together.
Bothwell’s (Beyond) Blue Farmer was the second farmer created as part of Grietje van Randen’s community arts project “Looking Out For Each Other”. To date 4 (Beyond) Blue Farmers have been created around the State, with the latest installed on Bruny Island in 2020, where local artist Jamie Edward created an interpretation sign to describe what the creation of a Beyond Blue Farmer is all about (see next page).
Since his creation in 2019 the Bothwell farmer has stood looking out with his hand above his eyes at the entrance to Bothwell, reminding all of us to look out for each other. This message could continue if the community wants it to, but he may need a new set of clothes to prevent the deteriorating blue bailing twine ending up all through the paddock.
The Spin In has kindly offered support if the Bothwell community would like the farmer to remain, so they need to know if the community wants to create new clothes for the farmer, and if so, are there people who would be willing to help with the knitting and weaving of his clothes, should he be dressed in different clothes that may last longer or are there any other ideas?
It is envisaged that any project would be a collaboration between the school and the broader Bothwell community and Grietje would like to hear from anyone with suggestions and/or who would be happy to help!
